Description
Centerba Amaro is one of the most iconic and powerful herbal liqueurs in the Italian tradition, originating from the Abruzzo region. Its name comes from the expression “one hundred herbs”, referring to the wide variety of aromatic herbs, medicinal plants, and roots used in the traditional recipe, many of which are gathered from the mountains of the Majella and Monte Morrone areas.
Created in the early 19th century by the Abruzzese pharmacist Beniamino Toro in Tocco da Casauria, it was originally developed as a tonic and digestive remedy before becoming one of Italy’s most renowned herbal digestifs.
With its distinctive intense emerald-green color, Centerba stands out for its complex and balsamic aroma, featuring notes of mint, wormwood, lemon balm, juniper, spices, and numerous mountain herbs. On the palate, it delivers a bold, herbaceous, and long-lasting flavor, accompanied by a pronounced alcoholic warmth due to its high alcohol content, which in traditional versions can reach up to 70% ABV.
Traditionally, Centerba is enjoyed:
- neat as an after-dinner digestif;
- added to espresso coffee as a traditional “correction”;
- as an ingredient in desserts and pastries;
- in modern mixology for aromatic and structured cocktails.
