Description
Biondi-Santi ‘s 2019 Brunello di Montalcino is already considered a milestone in the modern history of Tenuta Greppo. The 2019 vintage in Montalcino has been called “perfect,” and in the Biondi-Santi house it has yielded a monumental wine, capable of combining the usual aristocracy with an uncommon density and depth.
That is why this bottle is so special:
Organoleptic Profile
-
Color: A bright and vibrant ruby, with a transparency that promises endless longevity.
-
Nose: A bouquet of pinpoint precision. Initially tentative, it opens on notes of crisp morello cherry, blood orange and small berries. Complex hints of underbrush, graphite, tea leaves and a floral note of violets of rare intensity follow.
-
Taste: On the palate it is pure energy. The structure is imposing but defined by vibrant acidity (the house’s signature style) that supports a deep, layered sip. The tannins are extraordinarily fine, like thick silk, and the finish is savory, almost endless.
Technical Characteristics
-
2019 vintage: A flawless season with spring rains at the right time and a hot but not excessive summer, which allowed the grapes to ripen slowly and fully.
-
Aging: 36 months in large Slavonian oak barrels.
-
Longevity: This is a wine designed to defy the decades. Although the 2019 has a generosity of fruit that makes it fascinating even now (after proper oxygenation), it will reach its peak in 20 to 30 years.
The comparison with 2020
While the 2020 (which we saw earlier) is a more “harmonious” and perhaps more immediately ready wine, the 2019 has a greater backbone and complexity. It is the classic “investment wine” or one to save for once-in-a-lifetime occasions.
Insider tip: If you decide to open it today, keep in mind that Biondi-Santi Brunello should never be served too warm ( 18°C is ideal) and benefits greatly from oxygenation. Tenuta Greppo tradition even suggests uncorking the bottle several hours beforehand, decanting only if strictly necessary.
Do you have this bottle in your cellar or are you thinking of buying it? If you are looking for formal Sangiovese perfection, 2019 is the vintage to aim for without hesitation.
